Dr William Edward Glover's Photos of Africa and India During The Great War
| War broke out in 1914 and Nigeria soon found itself involved in fighting against neighbouring German Cameroons alongside French and Belgian troops. This campaign dragged on until 1916 when the Germans finally surrendered. Dr Glover appears to have been mobilised into service with the Royal Army Medical Corps with which he appears to have been involved with at University and returned to Britain for some additional training in 1916. Dr Glover then appears to have been posted to India before returning to the Indian Ocean in 1917 to join a Hospital Ship to support those wounded in the ongoing fighting in East and Central Africa. Many of the soldiers involved in fighting in Africa in World War Two were from the Indian Army perhaps this is why he spent some time in India. It should be noted that the fighting in Central and Eastern African continued for the entire duration of the war with the German forces only finally surrendering two weeks after fighting had finished in Europe in 1918. |
