Adjutants of Yeomanry regiments were borrowed from regular cavalry regiments for a period of a few years. This list is gleaned from army lists which included the yeomanry regiments only from 1880. The first adjutant, Captain William Powell appears on the 1881 list of the Hampshire Yeomanry. He is mentioned as being an honorary major and the date of his appointment as adjutant of the Hants Yeomanry as 5 April 1854. He was commissioned into the Inniskilling Dragoons as a cornet on 10 Nov 1843 and reached the rank of captain on 2 Nov 1849. He is not mentioned in the 1854 list of the Inniskilling Dragoons so it is possible that he left the regular army and joined the Hampshire Yeomanry as a full time adjutant. The army lists have him down as a retired field officer on 2 Mar 1880. However, he was appointed Lieutenant-Colonel Commandant from 24 April 1882 until the arrival of Colonel Crichton on 16 Jan 1884.
