Frederick Gordon-Mackenzie was commissioned into the 1st Royal Jersey Militia and transferred to the 2nd Dragoon Guards on 12 Aug 1876 as a lieutenant. He was promoted to captain on 21 July 1882 and appointed adjutant of the Hampshire Carabiniers on 21 July 1884, soon after Colonel Crichton took command. He was adjutant for 5 years. The last time he appeared in the Army List was as a captain in the 2nd DG in 1891.
