Reginald Edward Gascoyne-Cecil was born on 15 Nov 1878. He was the son of Lord Arthur Gascoyne-Cecil and Elizabeth Ann Wilson. He was educated at Winchester and went on to Trinity College, Cambridge. He entered the 21st Lancers as a 2nd Lieutenant on 18 Jan 1899, promoted to lieutenant on 2 Mar 1900, and captain on 26 June 1901. He was appointed adjutant of the Hampshire Yeomanry on 12 Oct 1907. The photo shows him in 1911 with a group of Hampshire Yeomanry officers. He is in the uniform of the 21st Lancers, sitting next to Lieutenant-Colonel Seely. Seated on the left of the photo is Colonel Crichton, the Honorary Colonel.
He returned to the 21st Lancers on 12 Oct 1911 and was promoted to Major on 10 Dec 1913. At that time he was Brigade Major, Eastern Command. Gascoyne-Cecil rose to the rank of lieutenant-colonel and was awarded the DSO in 1918. He held the post of Verderer of the New Forest and was JP for Hampshire. On 1 Feb 1902 he married Mary Beatrice Pilcher and they had two daughters and a son. Colonel Gacoyne-Cecil died on 22 Dec 1931.
