Bernard Granville was born on 21 July 1873, the 3rd child and only son of Major Bevil Granville and Alice Wodehouse of Wellesbourne Hall, Warwickshire. He was commissioned into the 3rd Hussars as a 2nd lieutenant on 24 June 1896 and promoted to lieutenant on 24 Feb 1897. He was promoted to captain on 22 Jan 1901 and posted to the Hampshire Carabiniers as adjutant on 6 Oct 1902 for a 5-year term of office. In that year he served in the South African War, from January to May 1902, taking part in operations in Transvaal and Orange River Colony. The photo shows him in the dress uniform of the 3rd Hussars, at camp in 1907 sitting next to Colonel Crichton, the Honorary Colonel. On the other side of the Colonel is the CO, Lieutenant-Colonel Seely.
Captain Granville returned to the 3rd Hussars in October 1907 but retired from the regular army on 11 Jan 1908 and joined the Warwickshire Yeomanry as a captain. He was a major from Feb 1911, and reached the rank of lieutenant-colonel. He was married to Edith Halsey (15 Jan 1903), daughter of Rt Rev Sir Thomas Halsey Bt. They lived in the family home at Wellesbourne Hall and had three sons. Lt-Col Bernard Greville died on 4 Nov 1933.
