The officer seated on the left is Colonel Crichton in dress tunic, medals and forage cap. John Jeffrey Readman was born on 6 Nov 1884 in Edinburgh. He lived at Broadholm, Lockerbie, Dumfries-shire. Commissioned into the Scots Greys as a 2nd lieutenant on 2 Mar 1902, promoted to lieutenant on 25 Nov 1909. He was appointed adjutant of the Hampshire Carabiniers on 12 Oct 1911 with the temporary rank of captain. He was a noted polo player, winning the county cup in 1910. He reached the rank of lieutenant-colonel, commanding the Scots Greys and retired in 1928. He was married and had one known child, Alexander George Jeremy Readman born in 1920.
