David Ogilby was born in 1856 and commissioned into the 10th Hussars in 1875. He inherited the title of 11th Earl of Airlie in Sep 1881 and promoted to Captain on 18 Feb 1884. He was appointed adjutant of the Hampshire Carabiniers on 21 July 1889 and was a favourite of the CO, Col Crichton. The photo shows him in 1890 wearing the Hampshire Yeomanry mess dress which is unusual because adjutants from regular cavalry regiments normally wore the uniform of their regiment. Lord Airlie was killed in the Boer War on 11 June 1900. A more detailed account of his career can be seen here.
