Henry Lawrence Daly was one of the administrators who helped maintain continuity in Northern Rhodesia during the transitional years of British South Africa Company rule. His service came at a time when the territories of North‑Eastern Rhodesia and North‑Western Rhodesia were being consolidated, and his role was to ensure that the machinery of government continued to function between the longer tenures of Robert Edward Codrington, John Carden, and Lawrence Aubrey Wallace.
Daly’s importance lies in his contribution to stability. He represented the cadre of Company officials who, though not always remembered with the prominence of Codrington or Coryndon, were essential in keeping administration intact across vast territories with limited European personnel. His work helped pave the way for the eventual amalgamation of the two protectorates into Northern Rhodesia in 1911.
