Dr William Edward Glover's Photos of Southern Nigeria Prior to The Great War
| After his time in Angola working as a doctor on the Benguella Line, Dr Glover returned to Britain where he attained more qualifications in Tropical Medicine. He clearly had developed a passion for Africa and was soon hired by the Colony of Southern Nigeria to work with the West African Medical Service. Soon North and South Nigeria merged in to the single colony of Nigeria. These photographs show his time in Nigeria up until the outbreak of the First World War which with a German colony next door was to bring Nigeria on to the front line of the war. They are particularly focussed on the laying out and construction of Port Harcourt in 1913 with which Dr Glover appears to have been assigned as a Medical Officer for the engineers, surveyors and administrators carving out this new settlement from the virgin jungle. |
