Dr William Edward Glover's Photos of Benguella Railway in Angola

In 1912 Dr Glover travelled to Angola aboard the SS Berwick Castle in order to act as the Medical Officer on the Benguela Railway being constructed from Lobito to Luau. Despite being built in a Portuguese colony, this railway was being built by and for the Scottish engineer Sir Robert Williams. His company had discovered huge copper deposits in Central Africa and needed a way to ship the heavy ore to the port of Lobito so that it could be exported. Similarly a railway would allow for plant and machinery to travel into the continent of Africa. Eventually it hooked up to Belgian and British railway lines. It was to prove to be a highly profitable and successful railway line.
