The Gin Palaver

The album goes on to explain that the Portuguese Commandant, soldiers and the British Vice Consul were present at this meeting. The term 'The Gin Palaver' is a fun way of explaining that this is an informal meeting conducted with alcohol. A Palaver was the term for a meeting used widely throughout Africa. The fact that gin was involved seems to suggest that this was very much an informal social visit.
