Lewis Horace Phillips

Lewis Horace Phillips entered the army as a lieutenant on 2 Dec 1874. He went on active service with the 2nd Battalion in the expedition against the Jowaki Afridis in 1877-78, and served with the 9th East Norfolks in the 2nd Afghan War of 1878-80 including the operations in the Khyber Pass. He commanded the 2nd Battalion when it went out to South Africa in 1900. When they were stationed at Pretoria Lt Col Phillips was relieved by Lt-Col C E Borton in January 1901.

In the photo, Lieutenant-Colonel Phillips wears the dress tunic of the Norfolk Regiment, scarlet with white facings, gold lace and Russia braid. The elaborate decoration on his sleeves clearly denotes his rank, having two rows of gold lace edged on both sides by gold braid formed into circles. The upper point of the lace is padded. His sword is slung from a white leather waist-belt that has a clasp decorated with the Britannia badge and castle. In full dress, worn on special occasions, he would have a gold laced waist-belt and a gold and crimson striped sash on his left shoulder instead of the crimson sash worn here for normal parades. The medals are the India medal 1849-95 which has a red and blue striped ribbon, and this has a clasp JOWAKI 1877-8. The other medal is the Afghanistan medal 1878-80 which has a green ribbon edged with crimson.
