This pattern of clasp was introduced in 1855 when the infantry adopted the tunic to replace the coatee. The central device with Britannia and Norwich Castle in silver, was the ‘male’ part attached to the belt on the right side (from the wearer’s viewpoint), slotting into the circle bearing the regimental title. From 1855 to 1881 the central device was Britannia without the castle over the numeral IX (examples exist with an Arabic 9). She had a lion and globe in that case, and the circle was inscribed EAST NORFOLK REGIMENT. The post 1881 clasp had Britannia minus the lion and globe but smaller, and no number. The Castle device was the badge of both the 1st or West Norfolk Militia and the 2nd or East Norfolk Militia (later the 3rd and 4th Battalions of The Norfolk Regiment).
