The Dayes print of an officer of the 9th Regiment is worthy of close scrutiny as the artist and engravers have gone to great pains to record details. The silver lace, placed in pairs, on the lapels, collar and cuffs are shown to form a small T shape at one end and a silver button at the other. The lace on the collar does not appear to have a button. The collar itself differs in style to the private’s in that the turn-down style has transformed into a stand collar. The buttons are silver with a figure 9 within a circle. They have been added to the silver lace purely as decoration on both waist-length lapels. The waistcoat buttons are also silver and numbered. The shirt is worn fastened to the neck with a black stock tied round, and a display of white ruff at the throat.
The silver gorget just below the ruff is connected to the topmost buttons with blue ribbon. Below that can be seen the silver belt-plate showing the figure of Britannia. The sword hilt is accurately drawn and a gold lace sword knot with fringed end is wrapped around the hand guard. The officer’s hair is tied up in a clubbed style, fastened with a ribbon. The hat, worn at a jaunty angle, as shown in all the prints of battalion company officers and men, has a silver double cord and button in the centre of the black silk cockade. The feather plume is all white.
