In 1994 the Queen’s Own Highlanders (Seaforths and Camerons) amalgamated with the Gordon Highlanders. This photo, taken four years later, shows pipers of The Highlanders, as the regiment was called after amalgamation. The figure in the foreground is a piper wearing the green no.1 dress ceremonial doublet. The edges of his cuff and the button loops are gold braid, and the lace forming stripes on his shoulder wings is gold. The Inverness skirts are partly concealed having gold braid button loops, but plain edges. The Pipe Major is on the extreme left of the picture, showing gold lace edges to his doublet skirts.
The tartan worn by the pipers is the Cameron of Erracht sett and the bag on his pipes is Gordon Highlanders' sett. The black shoulder-belt worn on the right shoulder forms a sword frog on the left hip that is very visible on the nearest piper’s kilt. This formerly held a broadsword but pipers had not carried them since the 1880s.
This view of the pipers shows the regimental badge on the left side of the blue glengarry cap which is the same as the one worn by the QO Highlanders before 1994. The eagle feather is worn and the pipe banners show the blue reverse side with the regimental badge of the stag’s head and motto, and crowned thistle. The hose are red and green with garter ribbons of special pipers’ pattern
