The Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders

Piper’s Skean Dhu 1999

The skean dhu in this photo is worn by a piper of the Highlanders (Seaforth, Gordons and Camerons). It was published in ‘The Scottish Regiments’ by Ted Nevill (Crowood Press 1999). Pipers of the amalgamated regiment wore the tartan and hose of the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders with a special pattern garter ribbon, not scarlet like the rest of the regiment. The black buttons on the white gaiters were adopted by the Gordon Highlanders to mark the death of Sir John Moore at Corunna in 1809.
