Henry Radford Norman was born in 1818, the son of the Reverend S H Norman of Deal, Kent. He entered the 10th Regiment in 1838 at the age of 20 and served in the Sikh Wars, fighting at Sobraon, Gujerat and the siege of Multan. On 9 Sept 1848 he was in the force that stormed the Sikh trenches in front of the city of Multan. In the 1848-49 campaign he saw action at Sujarkund where he commanded troops in the advanced batteries of the camp.
He served in the Indian Mutiny, where he commanded two companies when the sepoys mutinied at Benares on 4 June 1857. He was put in command of selected marksmen of the regiment when it served in the Jounpore Field Force. They were in action at Chanda, Sultanpore and Dhowraha. He was with the regiment at the repulse of the mutineers at Amerpoore and at the siege of Lucknow where he was in the storming party that captured Emaumbara and the Kaiser Bagh. He commanded the regiment at the passage of the River Tonse, and the forcing the enemy’s position near Azimghur. He was present at the skirmish near Birheea and the defeat of the sepoys at Jugdespore, and subsequently repulsed them from that post. He commanded the regiment in the operations on 26 May and the 2nd and 4th June. He was several times mentioned in despatches and promoted to a brevet of lieutenant-colonel on 26 April 1859.
He commanded the 1st Battalion, 10th Regiment from 14 June 1864 to October 1873. He retired in 1881 with the rank of lieutenant-general, and lived at The Hearne, Charlton Kings, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. He was elevated to Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) and appointed Colonel of the Manchester Regiment (63rd & 96th) from 25 Sept 1895 until his death on 16 December 1899. The photo shows him c1870 wearing dress uniform of the 10th Regiment, scarlet tunic and yellow facings, with the rank of colonel. He has medals for the Sikh Wars and the Indian Mutiny as well as his CB. The shako on the table is the 1869-1878 pattern
