Afghan Sungha

Afghan fighters fire their jezails from behind a defensive wall called a sungha (sometimes spelled 'sangar'). This type of temporary protection has been used by the British army ever since, called a sangar. The illustration is by William Simpson who was with the Peshawar Field Force and made many sketches during the campaign of 1878-9 which formed the basis of engravings published in the Illustrated London News.
