This photo taken in 1917 shows an Indian soldier in France, on dismounted guard duty. The leather ammunition bandolier and spurs are evidence of his cavalry role but he holds his Lee Enfield rifle with bayonet fixed in preparation for fighting as infantry. The scene is peaceful and most likely to be somewhere well behind the front line. In Gauche Wood, the anticipation of a German counter-attack, and persistent shelling, meant that the troopers would have been well dug in.
