British Empire Title

18th Bengal Lancers Cavalry

The 18th Lancers at Mametz

During the battle of the Somme in July 1916, the 18th Lancers spent much of their time in the area of Mametz Wood, sending out patrols or waiting to follow up any success by the infantry. This rare photo shows the Indian soldiers, some wearing helmets and some in their khaki lungis. A turbaned officer is on the left of the photo out in front of the front rank. Some lances are visible.
