The regiment in the early days made no attempt at uniform or uniformity. There were some trained soldiers from disbanded units but the Maharattas themselves provided their own horse and armaments. Even a year after the regiment was raised, one third of each Troop was armed with a sword and lance, the rest with swords only. This horseman from a print of 1828 shows how they probably looked 30 years later. Carbines were issued, at a later stage, to 12 men in each Troop. Saddles and bridles were leather in some cases, but others had felt-and-cotton quilts for saddles, and various decorations on the bridle.
