Fakirs were ascetics who lived rough and relied on charity for survival. They had a high tolerance of pain and were known for resting on a bed of nails or piercing themselves with spikes and hooks. They performed ‘magical’ tricks and feats of endurance, and were regarded as spiritual and holy.
