General Sir William Lockhart had under his command, an army of 34,000 men. The cavalry consisted of the 6th, 9th and 18th Bengal Lancers as well as the Jodhpur Lancers. Out of these Lockhart chose 27 men of the 18th, commanded by Jemadar Khan Mohammed Khan, to be his permanent personal escort.
