Gul Mawaz Khan posed for this photo in England in 1902. He represented the 18th Lancers at King Edward VII’s Coronation, as a young officer. He was promoted in 1903 to Ressaidar, and in 1912 appointed Risaldar-Major of the 18th. His red uniform can be compared with the 1887 photo of his father Nadir Ali Khan who was Risaldar-Major up until his death in 1890. The main difference is the breast pockets on Gul Mawaz’s kurta which the uniform of 1887 did not have. The Indian officers’ uniform differed from the full dress worn by British officers in the style of waist-belt. The photos of the two Indian officers show a waist-belt of similar pattern to the pouch-belt, but British officers wore a lancer girdle without the rectangular clasp.
