Indian commissioned officer ranks were, from the most junior, jemadar, ressaidar, risaldar and risaldar-major. This Baluch ressaidar wears a red kurta with gold lace on the collar, down the front and on the cuffs. He has white gauntlets which were not worn by the rank-and-file. Plain leather belts are worn, with a sword suspended in a frog from the waist on his left side. His is not a Sam Browne as worn by the men; instead he has a pouch-belt which is decorated with silver chains and pickers. This photo provides evidence that the gold laced belts worn by Risaldar-Major Nadir Ali Khan in London in 1887 were supplied to him especially on the occasion of the Queen’s Jubilee.
