The Handley Page Hampden was one of the RAF’s early-war twin‑engined medium bombers. Entering service in 1938, it formed part of Bomber Command’s first operational force alongside the Wellington and Whitley. The aircraft carried a crew of four and was used for night bombing, minelaying and anti‑shipping operations until it was replaced by heavier types from 1942. Its narrow fuselage and distinctive tailplane gave it a characteristic appearance, but the design provided good speed and handling for its period.
On 21 March 1941, six Hampdens of 49 Squadron took off from RAF Scampton for a night raid on the German naval base at Lorient. Weather conditions were poor, with full cloud cover at around 2,000 feet. Several aircraft experienced radio reception problems during the operation.
Hampden X3054, returning from the mission with a radio unable to receive, struck the high ground of Hameldown on Dartmoor at about 1,400 feet. The aircraft caught fire on impact. Sergeants Brames, Ellis and Lyon appear to have died immediately. Pilot Officer Wilson, the pilot, survived the crash but died the following day. He had remained strapped into his seat during the crash. He and the South African Sergeant Ellis, the second pilot, are buried side by side in Exeter’s Higher Cemetery. The two air gunners were buried in their home towns.
The investigation concluded that Pilot Officer Wilson had probably intended to descend through cloud over the sea before crossing the coast, but was further north than he believed and flew into rising ground. The crash site lies 2¾ miles north of Widecombe‑in‑the‑Moor, on the ridge of Hameldown. A memorial stone marks the location.
