The hot climate uniform had been smartened up since 1918 and, although this man is a SSM (WO class 2), the uniform for the rank and file was not much different in quality. His rank is shown on both forearms as a metal crown on backing cloth. The inset, top left, shows the rank badge enlarged with the regimental arm badge on red backing below it, worn on the right arm. This latter badge is the monogram KDG with crown above adopted in 1930. The garter star and crown badge adopted in 1915 can be seen on his collar. This was replaced by the former Hapsburg double-headed eagle badge in 1938, but the crowned monogram was retained as an arm badge.
His headgear is the Wolseley helmet reserved for smart occasions. It has a pale khaki puggaree with a top edge of blue and a red hackle on the left side. The headgear worn for normal drill and exercise was the flat-topped pith topee. His rank permitted him to wear a Sam Browne belt and Hessian boots with his jodhpurs. The rank-and-file were issued with a leather ammunition bandolier and puttees.
