Dress uniform was facing the end of its time in 1913. Khaki service dress had already replaced the blue undress frock and was soon to replace dress uniform. The scarlet tunic worn by this sergeant has yellow piping around the blue velvet collar, and shoulder straps, and the same cording forms the Austrian knots on his sleeves, but half-concealed by his gauntlets. He has brass regimental collar badges and a brass KDG shoulder title. The sergeant stripes, on his right sleeve only, are of gold lace and have a silver regimental NCO badge above. He holds the final pattern of other ranks’ cavalry sword, issued in 1912. It is attached to white slings supported on his waist-belt.

The photo is published in the book to illustrate this sergeant’s use of an officer’s silver plated collar badge as an NCO’s arm badge. It differs from the normal arm badge because the double-headed eagle and shield also has the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece.
