This print from the artwork of Henry Martens was published by Ackermann on 21 Oct 1846. The officer is wearing the helmet introduced in 1843, as are the troopers in the background. The uniform had changed little since 1830, but in 1848 changes were made so that the tails were shortened and the four embroidered loops on the sleeves were reduced to one on each blue velvet cuff.
The horse furniture was still ornate at this stage, although this was the last year for the dress shabraque, as it was discontinued for all the heavy cavalry in 1847. The bridle has been altered so that the cross straps on the charger’s face were changed to a badge suspended from the brow-band. There is also a regimental badge on the charger’s breast. The officer’s dress sabretache was the highly embroidered final version with VR cypher, discontinued in the early 1850s before the regiment went to the Crimea.
