George Reade was born in Shipton Court, Shipton-under-Wychwood, Oxfordshire, in 1687. He was the son of Sir Edward Reade, 2nd Baronet, and his wife Elizabeth Harby. He was commissioned into the 1st Regiment of Foot Guards with the regimental rank of lieutenant. He served in Marlborough’s campaigns and was promoted to captain-lieutenant in 1708, and captain in 1709. By 1729 he was a second major in the Guards, the equivalent of colonel in the army. He was also a politician, standing as MP for Tewkesbury in 1722 and 1727, until 1734. His colonelcies were:

Lieutenant-General George Reade was married in 1744 to Jane Nowes, daughter of Charles Nowes, a barrister of Wood Ditton, Cambridgeshire. They had no children. He died on 28 March 1756.
