Henry Martens painted several watercolours of the 9th lancers at around this time. The blue jackets would lead us to believe that these are the uniforms of the 1840s, but from 1829 to 1831 the style changed, from the plastron-fronted blue jacket to a double-breasted jacket, retaining the same colours, blue with crimson facings. The private, in the centre of the composition is in marching order with dress jacket, but the officer on the left and the sergeant-major on the right are in summer dismounted stable dress. The officer wears a waist-length stable jacket which is blue with a crimson collar and pointed cuff. There is gold lace around the collar, cuff and the hem, as well as up the front which is fastened with hooks and eyes. There are gold cords on the shoulders and he has a gold-laced pouch-belt with a silver buckle and tip, and a silver pouch that has a gilt royal cypher and crown. His black leather waist-belt supports a sword and sabretache which has a brass badge in the centre.
The forage cap appears to be a peakless blue cap with a gold cap-band and gold purl button on top. The 1822 Dress Regulations do not specify a forage cap, but the 1834 DR describes a peaked blue cap with gold cap-band and gold braid crossing over the top. The white trousers were worn in the months from April to October.
The lancer holding his horse’s bridle has a jacket which has a short tail at the back. The details are indistinct but two lines of yellow lace can be seen on each side of his crimson collar. He has a broad white leather pouch-belt and a foul-weather lance-cap which is plain black. He does not wear gauntlets. His trousers are Oxford mixture which look brownish black. He holds a lance with a red over white pennon. The saddle is covered by a white sheepskin.
The senior NCO on the right does not show his rank which would be on his right sleeve. Sergeant-Majors had four inverted chevrons with a crown above. The stable jacket is waist-length, buttoned up the front and having a gold edge to the collar. The cuffs are pointed but without any edging. His forage cap is similar to the officer's but not such good quality. He also wears white summer trousers.
