Fitzgerald Wintour was born on 30 Dec 1860. His father was Rev. Fitzgerald Wintour, his mother was Isabel Milnes Gaskell. He was a descendant of Prime Minister George Grenville. After Sandhurst, Wintour was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 1st Battalion Royal West Kent Regiment in August 1880. He served in Egypt in 1882 and the Nile Expedition of 1884-85 while he was Adjutant of 1/R West Kents. He was mentioned in despatches and promoted to brevet-major the day after he was promoted to captain. He also served in the Sudan Frontier Field Force in 1885-86, involved in the battle of Giniss. He was also in Sir William Lockhart’s campaign on the Northwest Frontier in 1897. In the Tochi Field Force he was Deputy Assistant Quartermaster General (DAQMG) and was in the operations in the Tochi Valley for which he was again mentioned in despatches and awarded a brevet of lieutenant-colonel..
His service in the South African War began in 1899, serving as Deputy Assistant Adjutant-General (DAAG). Again mentioned in despatches. In March 1904 he was transferred to the 2nd Battalion Norfolk Regiment to take up the appointment of commanding officer. He took the battalion out to South Africa where they remained until October 1908, when they went to Gibraltar. He relinquished command in 1909.
In World War One Brigadier-General Wintour commanded the 84th Brigade in France but in February 1915 a German raid deprived the brigade of 100 yards of trench and Wintour was sacked by the GOC 28th Division. After this he suffered from a nervous condition and was sent home. However, he returned to the front in July 1915 as Deputy Assistant Quartermaster General until November. He retired from the army in 1918.
Fitzgerald Wintour was married twice. His first wife died in 1904 and he married again in January 1912 to Alice Jane Blanche Foster who was a descendant of the 4th Earl of Bristol. They had two children, Cordelia b.30 Nov 1912, and Charles b.18 May 1917. Major-General Fitzgerald Wintour died on 18 June 1949.
