Edward Peter Strickland was born on 3 Aug 1869. He was commissioned into the Norfolk Regiment in 1888, serving in Upper Burma in 1888-9 and on the Dongola Expedition of 1896. He fought at the Atbara and Omdurman in 1898. In 1906 he was serving in Nigeria and put in command of the North Nigeria Regiment in 1909.
In WW1 he was CO of the 1st Bn Manchester Regiment from 1914 but then promoted to command the Jullunder Brigade from 1915. Later he commanded 98th Brigade, then from 1961 until the end of the war he was GOC 1st Division, taking part in the Battle of the Somme and the Battle of Lys. After the war he commanded in Germany and was then GOC 6th Division in Ireland. In September 1920 he survived an assassination attempt by the IRA in Cork. The next year he was appointed Military Governor for Munster, Kilkenny and Wexford. In 1927 he was commanding troops in Egypt, his last posting before retirement in 1931.
He was appointed Colonel of the Norfolk Regiment on 24 Dec 1917, a position he held for almost 30 years, until 1 May 1946. He was married on 17 July 1918 to Barbara Cresswell (née ffolkes) who already had two daughters. She was the widow of Captain Francis Creswell, an officer in the Norfolk Regiment who was killed in action in 1914. Edward and Barbara lived at The Old Hall, Snettisham, Norfolk and had another daughter together. General Sir Edward Peter Strickland died on 24 June 1951.
