This contemporary map shows the topography turned so that the right of the map is north. The Hudson River flows south, eventually to New York City. Saratoga is on a tributary, the Fishkill River. Burgoyne’s British battalions retreated from the Saratoga side on the night of the 8th/9th October, over the Fishkill, up to the entrenched camp on the heights The positions of the battalions are indicated; the 9th Regiment being the diagonal in the centre of the camp. The 21st Scots Fusiliers are on the right (north side), Fraser’s Rangers on their left, near the Light Infantry companies. The Grenadier companies are just behind the 21st, and the 24th are on the left of the Light Infantry. American loyalist volunteers are placed at the south end of the camp.The German contingent were separated from them on a hill to the right of the map. The date on the map should read 10th October, not 10th Sept.
