William James Massy, born c1837, joined the 9th East Norfolk Regiment on 20 July 1855. There is no record of him serving in the Crimea. He was 2nd lieutenant-colonel of the 1st Battalion from July 1882 and commanded the battalion from 20 August 1884. He was promoted to colonel while in command and retired in May 1888. In 1867 he was married to Elizabeth Frances Massy, daughter of Henry William Massy and Maria Cahill, and sister of Lt-General William Godfrey Dunham Massy. The photo shows W J Massy as a company officer c1864 wearing undress regimental uniform, a scarlet shell jacket with yellow facings.
