Two types of forage cap worn by officers of the 9th East Norfolks in undress are shown here. The older style at the top has a flat peak and is more shapeless. This conforms to the 1861 Dress Regulations in that the gold regimental number has a Britannia badge above it, both embroidered. In this case Britannia is accompanied by a lion. The top of the blue cloth cap has a netted black button surrounded by black lace figuring. The cap-band is of black silk oak-leaf pattern lace.
The lower cap conforms to the 1883 Dress Regulations and has a maker’s label that dates it before 1890. The shape is more formalised but still has the black silk patterned cap band with button and figuring on top. The number 9 was removed after 1881, and the gold embroidered Britannia badge is larger but without the lion. This example belonged to a field officer as indicated by the gold braid around the top edge. The gold embroidered peak was worn by all officer ranks.
