Charles Elmhirst Luard was born in Fareham, Hampshire on 5 Aug 1876, the son of Major-General Charles Edward Luard RE and Caroline Mary Hartley. He was educated at Harrow and Sandhurst, commissioned into the 1st Battalion on 18 Nov 1896.
He was a lieutenant when he was attached to the Central African Regiment from 1899 to 1904. On 30 Sep 1900 he was badly wounded at Obassa, Ashanti (Ghana), losing the sight in one eye. He was mentioned in despatches and awarded the DSO.
The 1st Battalion was sent to France with the BEF at the outbreak of WW1. They were in the Retreat from Mons and fought at the Battle of Le Cateau, the Marne and the Aisne. Major Luard was reported missing in action on 15 September 1914 at Chivres Hill, Missy-sur-Aisne. His body was never found. His name is inscribed on the Memorial at La Ferte-sous-Jouarre, Ile de France.
Major Luard was married to Dorothy Frances Barrett 1913 in Taunton and had a son
