Henry Disney Ellis was born on 9 May 1819 at Shooters Hill, South Mimms, Middlesex. He was the son of Richard Rogers Ellis and Charlotte Mary Heyman. He entered the army as an ensign in the 33rd (or 1st Yorkshire West Riding) Regiment on 14 June 1842. He went out to the Crimea with his regiment from 5 Feb 1855 and took part in the siege of Sevastopol, including the assaults of the Redan on 18 Jun and 8 Sep. He was wounded on 15 Aug and again on 8 Sep. In 1857 he was a major in the Depot Battalion at Chatham and was then appointed CO of the Depot at Colchester. He exchanged to the 1st Battalion, 9th East Norfolk Regiment in January 1863 and commanded the battalion in the Ionian Islands, Malta, Gibraltar, South Africa and Ireland until May 1872 when he sold his commission. He died at Cheltenham on 30 October 1877 aged 58. He was married and left 7 children; 4 daughters and 3 sons.
