New Colours were received by the 9th East Norfolks on 21 Nov 1848, at Newry. A War Office muddle meant that the new Colours were sent to India while the regiment was sailing home to England. The Colours eventually arrived back in Britain in March 1848 and presented to the regiment by Major-General Philip John Bainbrigge.
Regulations issued in 1844 stipulated that the Queen’s Colour was to be the Union flag bearing only the regimental number in Roman numerals, and Queen Victoria’s crown over the number. Battle honours were to be shown on the Regimental Colour only. This illustration was the frontispiece of Cannon’s history of the regiment published in 1848. The regimental Colour has 13 battle honours arranged around the central device of Britannia over a small IX surrounded by the title EAST NORFOLK and a Union wreath, topped by a Royal crown. The battle honours are 9 for the Peninsula War; one, CABOOL 1842, for the First Afghan War, and 3 for the First Sikh War of 1845-46, MOODKEE, FEROZESHAH and SOBRAON.
