Henry James Buchanan born in 1830, commissioned as an ensign into the 47th (Lancashire) Regiment of Foot on 14 June 1850 and served with them in the Crimean War, fighting at the Alma and Inkerman, also the sortie on 26 October and throughout the siege of Sevastopol. After the fall of the city he was appointed Town Major. He transferred to the 9th (East Norfolk) Regiment in 1860 and was appointed commanding officer of the 2nd battalion on 1 Jan 1873. He went out to India with the regiment and served on the Northwest frontier in 1877-78, commanding a column in the Field Force under Brigadier-General Ross against the Afridis. He was mentioned in despatches and awarded the CB. After leaving the regiment he served on the staff in Dover and in Ireland. He commanded the 3rd Brigade at Aldershot in Jan 1887 and was appointed GOC Eastern District, based in Colchester, in Jan 1889. He was made Honorary Colonel of the Norfolk Regiment on 28 May 1898, an appointment he held until his death on 7 October 1903.
He was in command of the 2nd Battalion, 9th Regiment from January 1873 to May 1878. The photo shows him c1876 wearing the uniform of a colonel in the 9th with appropriate sleeve decoration of gold lace and braid, and embroidered crowns and stars on each side of his collar to denote the rank of colonel. He has a Crimea medal with three clasps for ALMA, INKERMANN and SEBASTOPOL. Next to that is the Order of the Medjidie 5th class, then the Turkish medal and Sardinian medal. He was later awarded the CB and a medal for his service in India in 1877-78.
