Henry Ralph Browne was born c1828 and entered the army as an ensign in the 9th East Norfolk Regiment on 3 April 1846. Captain Henry Browne served with the 9th Regiment in the Crimean War from 27 Nov 1854. He took part in the assaults of 18 June and 8 Sep. In the latter part of the war he was ADC and later brigade major to Major General Ridley in the 1st Division. He served in China in 1860-61 and went on to Japan in 1864 where he commanded troops protecting the Treaty Ports. From 1863 he was appointed CO of the 2nd Battalion 20th Regiment. After 9 years in that appointment he exchanged briefly to command the 37th and 63rd Regiments. He went on to serve as a major-general in the Afghan War of 1879-80 with the Kuram Division and was in the Zaimusht Expedition.
In retirement General Browne lived at ‘Vancouver’, Sands Road, Paignton, Devon. Prior to that he lived in Jubblepore, India. He died in Devon on 23 December 1917.
