Albemarle Bertie was born on 17 Sep 1744. He was the son of Peregrine Bertie, a barrister of Lincoln’s Inn. His mother was Elizabeth Payne. He was commissioned into the 1st Foot Guards in 1762 and by 1792 had reached the rank of 2nd Major. In 1793 he was promoted to major-general and appointed the first Colonel of the 81st Regiment, known as the Loyal Lincoln Volunteers. However, this appointment only lasted 15 months as he exchanged to the 9th (East Norfolk) Regiment on 31 Dec 1794. Two more colonelcies followed:
1804 Colonel of the 77th (East Middlesex) Regiment 15 June 1804 - 24 Mar 1808
1808 Colonel of the 89th Regiment 25 Mar 1808 - 18 Sep 1818
He reached the rank of General in 1803 and retired from active service in 1809 when he inherited the title 9th Earl of Lindsay from his third cousin. He was MP for Stamford in 1801 until he inherited the peerage in 1809, but did not play an active part in politics. He was appointed Governor of Blackness Castle in 1814 and Governor of Charlemont Fort in 1818.
Albemarle Bertie was married twice, firstly to the widow of Thomas Scrope, Eliza Maria in May 1794. She died in July 1806 and, after becoming the Earl of Lindsay, he married, on 18 Nov 1809, Charlotte Layard, daughter of the Dean of Bristol. They had a daughter and two sons. General Bertie, Earl of Lindsay, died on 18 September 1818. The portrait is by George Romney.
