The dress tunic worn by Band Sergeant A C Smith, 2nd Battalion, has gold rank stripes on the right arm and gold lace around the top and front of the yellow collar. There is gold braid along the bottom of the collar and gold edging on his shoulder straps. The scarlet shoulder wings are also laced with gold. All this embellishment indicates his status as a staff sergeant, a rank just below Warrant Officer. A metal band badge sits above his stripes, having a Victorian crown over the lyre despite the fact that he has yellow facings, dating the photo beyond 1905. The medals are the Queen’s and King’s South Africa medals with three and two clasps respectively. The other medal is for Long Service and Good Conduct with a plain maroon ribbon.
