The 1st Battalion was in India and China before the Second World War. They were photographed in China in 1935. The regiment was renamed the Royal Norfolk Regiment on 3 July 1935, but the date of this photo from the Norfolk Museums Collection is not exact. The drummers, led by the drum-major, are wearing warm climate khaki service dress and khaki Wolseley helmets. Four tenor drummers form the front rank, having larger drums and wearing leopardskin aprons and white gauntlets. Side drummers are behind them and the bass drummer behind them. Bringing up the rear are drummers playing fifes.
