In 1930 the 1st Battalion was serving in India, stationed at Sialkot where this photo was taken. The drummers are in hot climate service dress with blue field service caps. The commanding officer sits in the centre, behind the bass drum. He is Lieutenant-Colonel William John O’Brien Daunt, son of Colonel William Daunt who commanded the 2nd Battalion from 1878 to 1883. Next to him sits the drum-major who wears a yellow embroidered sash. The bass drummer stands behind the CO, wearing a leopardskin apron, as do four others who are the tenor drummers. The side drummers are identified by the white drum carriage on their right shoulder. All of them have dark leather waist-belts and black plaited bugle cords and tassels.
