Drummer Sidney Charles James poses in dress uniform but with an undress Brodrick cap beside him. He carries a black cane which indicates that he is in walking-out order. The scarlet tunic has yellow facings which include the pointed cuffs, collar and shoulder straps. The white lace on his sleeves, collar and shoulder wings has a repeating pattern of red imperial crowns. The shoulder wings are edged with a red and white fringe which is threaded together at the ends of the fringe and pulled tight to give the impression that the wing is padded.
Drummer James has a good conduct stripe on his left forearm for 2 years’ service, and a crossed rifles marksman’s proficiency badge. The plaited bugle cords and tassels on his shoulder are black or at least very dark green. Although they were titled ‘drummers’ these soldiers were also buglers.
