The musicians in this group photo, taken at Dagshai in 1895, are wearing the scarlet undress frock tunic which has a white collar, and pointed cuffs with a white cord edge and trefoil at the point. The balance of the group is created by four sousaphones, two at the front and two at the back. The time-beater wears a white apron to carry the large bass drum, and the other percussionist sits the other side with a drum carriage on his right shoulder for the side drum. The others have a white pouch-belt on their left shoulder to carry sheet music in a white pouch on their back.
Four NCOs sit behind the drums. They all have sergeants’ stripes except for the Bandmaster who holds his sword. He and the band sergeant next to him have gold lace on their collars and wear an officer-style peaked forage cap. The rest of the men either wear a glengarry or a field service cap, identifiable by the two small brass buttons on the front.
