The 9th East Norfolk Regiment had a band from at least 1772 but no pictures are available until this Simkin painting reproduced in the History of the Regiment. The bandsman wears a white tunic with yellow facings and red piping. There are wings to the shoulders and he has a bandsman’s sword slung from a waist-belt. He holds a euphonium and wears a shako that was issued between 1861 and 1869. White jackets or coatees were popular for bandsmen in the 1820s, and were officially sanctioned in 1830. In 1855 the coatee, with epaulettes or shoulder scales, was discontinued and replaced by a tunic worn by all ranks.
