The blue cloth covered home service helmet was introduced for the infantry in 1878 but the badge had to be changed in 1881 when the regimental numbering gave way to territorial titles. This badge was worn on the helmet of the rank-and-file after 1902, differing from the previous pattern only in the crown which is the King’s crown. The central circle is inscribed simply NORFOLK. This title was adopted in 1881 whereas the previous title was the IXth East Norfolk Regiment. This example shows Britannia with her right arm resting on her knee, but other examples show the arm raised.
