This elaborate star badge was worn on shakos during the 1830s but introduced in 1829. The central part of the badge is the silver figure of Britannia over IX. The figure differs from other representations in that she has a lion at her feet. She still has the laurel branch in her right hand but the spear has been replaced by a trident, a symbol of the country’s naval power, since the trident was associated with Neptune. A laurel wreath surrounds the badge with battle honours: ROLEIA at the top, VIMIERA and BUSACO on each side, below them SALAMANCA on the left, and VITTORIA on the right. The lower three are, from the left, ST SEBASTIAN, PENINSULA and NIVE. The wreath is on a silver hobnail star. This was the badge worn previously by officers, now placed on a universal gilt garter star, the top point replaced by a Hanoverian crown.
